New wave of fibre waste sweeps fishery harbours countrywide

“Thirty metric tonnes of fibre waste is piled up in and around fishery harbours across the island,” observes the Ceylon Fishery Harbour Corporation.

According to the General Manager of the Corporation, Percy Samarasinghe, the pile up is a result of the absence of proper waste management and disposal measures.

Furthermore, he added that over 200 fibre vessels that are currently out of service have also been piled up at the fishery harbors.

According to the Director of the Environmental Protection Unit at the Central Environment Authority, Ajith Wijeysundara, a proper waste management mechanism for fibre waste will be implemented by next month.
