Norochcholai third phase delay costs Rs250mn daily: Minister

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) is bearing a loss of 250 million rupees a day, due to delays in developing the third phase of the Norochcholai coal power plant, the Power and Energy Minister in a statement said.

Mahinda Amaraweera said officials had informed him of the loss due to delays in developing the power plant, which has required costlier power purchases from the private sector.

The minister said this in a meeting held at the ministry of Petroleum on January 23, 2020 to discuss about future projects.

The third phase of Norochcholai and the Kerawalapitiya liquid natural gas (LNG) power plant, are expected to add 900 Mega Watts (MW) to the national electricity capacity.

The cabinet this week approved the expansions, with the third phase in Norochcholai comprising of two 300MW plants.
.
Amaraweera said, former government had not initiated any power projects, which has led to a short fall in power supply from the CEB.

He said the CEB, Public Utilities Commission and Sustainable Energy Authority should jointly take decisions in power projects.

He said the government will support the ministries by collaborating with the Attorney General and Attorney General’s Department in legal matters.
