Election Watchdog the People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections says the forthcoming Provincial Election could be delayed owing to the proposed amendments to the existing electoral system.
Executive Director of PAFFREL, Rohana Hettiarachchi urged the government to amend the relevant clauses within a stipulated time frame in order to maintain the orderly conduct of the Provincial Council election.
Speaking to NewsRadio Rohana Hettiarachchi said the government must also amend clauses of the existing electoral system, in order to grant bonus seats for respective political parties or independent groups that claim victory in an electoral district.
Meanwhile, the Elections Commission has urged the government to amend the existing electoral system prior to holding the Provincial Council Election.
Additional Elections Commission, Saman Sri Ratnayake, said, the Commission has notified the government of the required action that must be taken.
He said the new delimitation report on Provincial Councils must be passed by a 2/3rd majority in Parliament.
