The Criminal Investigations Department of Police has arrested Mannar area in charge Assistant Superintendent of Police Upul Alawatta last night for the abduction and disappearance of a person in 2008.
ASP Alawatta is accused of abducting an individual named Ajith Sunanda Kandambi, a resident of Madapatha, Piliyandala on 31 December 2008 from police custody, torturing him and making him disappear.
At the time, the police officer was serving as the as the OIC of Piliyandala Police.
He was arrested after making a statement to the Criminal Investigation Department yesterday.
The ASP is due to be produced before the Kesbewa Magistrate’s Court today, the Police Headquarters stated.
The CID has named five police officers who served in Piliyandala Police station at that time and seven other persons as suspects in the case.
