President explains his decision to recall entire staff of Sri Lankan Embassy in Austria

President Sirisena confirming that he recalled the entire staff of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Austria including its Ambassador said he did so to ‘send a message’ to Sri Lanka’s diplomatic core to stress the importance of fulfilling duties.

Addressing the National Ozone Day celebrations at the BMICH in Colombo on Monday, the President said his communication staff attempted to contact the embassy in Vienna, Austria on six telephone lines and none of the lines were answered for over four hours.

“I wanted to contact our Ambassador over an official matter. My communication team attempted to contact the Embassy for four and a half hours. There are six telephone lines at the Embassy and none of them were answered,” the President said.

Pointing out that the embassy in Vienna concurrently accredited to five other European countries, the President asked if the embassy staff does not answer the phones how those countries can get in touch with the embassy.

“This is the reason why I took such a decision to recall the entire staff from laborer to the Ambassador,” the President said.

“I made this order to send a message to other embassies as well,” he said.

President Sirisena said the Ambassador and the staff will return to Sri Lanka within the next few days.
