Several prisoners who were convicted of engaging in activities related to the LTTE have been granted presidential pardons, spokesman for the department of Prisons Chandana Ekanayake said.
Accordingly, 8 LTTE detainees who were convicted and imprisoned have been granted a special pardon by the President in accordance with the powers vested on him by article 34 of the constitution, the prisons spokesperson further said.
According to Ekanayake, four of the convicts, who had been held at the Magazine Prison in Colombo were released on 21 October following a reduction of their sentence’s duration.

Two of the eight convicts will be released once both of them withdraw appeals they had filed in courts regarding their confinement.
The remaining two convicts are to be released following a rehabilitation program, with the matter being referred to the Attorney Generals Department for instructions.
