SLMC Leader, Urban Planning and Water Resources Minister Rauf Hakeem and ACMC Leader, Industries and Commerce Minister Rishard Bathiudeen have clashed in the Cabinet meeting yesterday over a Cabinet paper on the resettlement of Muslim persons in the Northern Province.
The Cabinet paper has reportedly resulted in a heated exchange of words between Hakeem and Bathiudeen.
The relevant Cabinet paper was presented by Minister Hakeem.
However, Bathiudeen has claimed that he could not support any proposal that would not mete out a fair treatment for the many war displaced Muslim persons from the North.
He has added that measures should be taken to resettle these Muslim persons.
However, Hakeem has said that all such measures could not be completed at once.
Bathiudeen has then claimed that Hakeem was working with the intention of scoring points and not with the intention of sincerely addressing the issues of the Muslim people.
President Maithripala Sirisena had then intervened and prevented the argument from proceeding further.
The President has called on all Muslim and Tamil leaders to join forces when addressing issues of the people displaced in the North.
