Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam says that schools will not be affected today by the toke strike to be launched by the teachers’ unions.
The Minister said the schools will be in session today as usual and requested the parents to send the children to schools.
Minister Kariyawasam stressed that the schools cannot be closed according to the whims of some media outlets and said the media reports that schools will be closed today is an insult to 4.5 million school children.
Minister Kariyawasam said that the education sector should not be used for narrow political objectives.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the National Free Teachers Association, Sudantha Ratnayake said that the planned trade union action of some Teachers Associations will not be successful. He expects more than 70 percent of teachers to be present at schools today.
The teachers and principals of all government schools are planning to launch a token strike today, 4th July to protest the government’s decision to reemploy politically victimized education sector employees.
