Shame. Shame. Shame. Shame on Ranil Wickramasinghe for being so insensitive. We can find leaders with brains and brawn. But when there’s a leader without a heart, then it becomes impossible. All he had to do on July 13th was say “Thank you for standing for the truth and our country. Now let me help you move and let’s work together to build a better nation”. The entire protest movement would have been his. Instead he did what he has always done. All he had to do was organise a simple, elegant ceremony for independence. He would have lost some pomp but gained a nation. Instead, he did what he always does.
Our stupidity is expecting a leopard to change its spots. Each time he becomes PM, we convince each other that “he is the only man who can do this”. He isn’t. He cannot do anything. He is an incapable, failed leader. He serves only himself. And he will celebrate his own independence tomorrow, alone, surrounded by those he is dependent on. While the free people of Sri Lanka will look on, imprisoned by poverty, despair and hopelessness.
