Due to heavy rains received in the Polonnaruwa area in the north central region of the country, the Parakrama Samudraya has reached spill levels and authorities have alerted the residents in low lying areas of the Mahaweli River.
The water capacity of the Parakrama Samudraya has increased to 116800 acre-feet and eight sluice gates have been opened, the authorities informed.
Each sluice gate has been raised by a foot and the water flows at a rate of 1120 cubic feet per second, according to the Assistant Irrigation Engineer in charge of the Parakrama Samudraya, DK de Silva.
Since the water outflow from the reservoir has been directed to the Mahaweli River, the official requested the people who use the Mahaweli River for their water needs to be vigilant.
Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology predicts that more than 100 millimeters of rain will be experienced in most parts of the country yesterday.
