Sri Lanka President seeks support of PM to punish the perpetrators of Central Bank bond scam

All the parties, including the Prime Minister should support the legal process to punish those who were involved in the Central Bank bond fraud, President Maithripala Sirisena says.

Addressing a public meeting held in Kandy on Monday (22) the President said all people of Prime Minister’s party as well as the opposition party should support to strengthen him instead of weakening him in this endeavor.

The President said that the SLFP members blamed him when he left the then government in 2014 and now the UNPers are blaming him, but he did not betray anyone and he was only working against corruption, theft, waste, and autocracy.

The former leader saying that the Yahapalana government is a failure wanted the President to join hands with him forgetting how he failed three times, he said. Even though there were two years left in his term, the former leader called for a fresh election due to the inability to face the economic problems caused through heavy loans and that he failed in the 2015 election as well as failed in the parliament election for the third time, the President recalled.

The President said that he was aware that the former leader who shouts on the stage about the Central Bank Bond Commission Report, did not come to Parliament to vote against Ravi Karunanayake when there was a no confidence motion against him, but instead he telephoned Ravi Karunanayake and wished him luck. Even the Central Bank Treasury Bond issue is discussed in different ways, it must be understood that the judges have clearly stated that the huge fraud has happened since 2008.

The President said that today, the people who are shouting on stage accusing that the country will be divided and sold, had planned to sell 240 acres of land to a Chinese company to build Port City and the way they sold 6 acres of land of Army headquarters to Shangri-La, taking away the Army headquarters of great war heroes.

At the moment of 200th anniversary of the historic Kandyan 1818 rebellion, the next revolution is to struggle against the fraud and corruption to save the country, the President emphasized. He further said that only the SLFP has the right and inheritance for a clean political movement and further stated that all the people in this country should rally around the SLFP on this 10 February, to build a prosperous country.

SLFP Senior Vice President Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva, Ministers Sarath Amunugama, S.B. Dissanayake, Former Prime Minister D.M Jayaratne, Central Province Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake, Mahinda Abeykoon, Thilina Bandara Tennakoon, Ediriweera Weerawardena and many others participated in this public rally.
