Sri Lanka state doctors strike today against FTA with Singapore

Sri Lanka state doctors’ trade union, Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) will start a one day all island token strike at 8 am today (May 17).

The doctors’ union is launching the strike to protest the signing of Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Singapore and proceeding Economic and Technology Cooperation Agreement (ETCA) with India without a National Trade Policy.

Dr. Haritha Aluthge, General Secretary of the GMOA says the FTA with Singapore has already been secretly signed in Singapore and it is causing the country a great damage and the Executive Committee of the GMOA had unanimously decided to go on strike on May 17 to object the government actions.

However, emergency services will be conducted in all hospitals and the doctors of pediatric, maternity and military hospitals will not strike, Dr. Aluthge said.
