Three Sri Lankans nabbed attempting to smuggle gold worth Rs. 170 million

Sri Lanka Navy has arrested three persons in the seas off Thalaimannar yesterday while they were attempting to smuggle 24.2kgs of gold to India.

The raid was carried out while the suspects were transporting the gold stock worth Rs. 170 million in a dinghy to India from Sri Lanka.

The hoard of the gold which consists of 242 biscuits, each weighing 100g, was concealed inside the dinghy.

The suspects, gold and the dinghy have been handed over to Sri Lanka Customs for legal proceedings.

The Navy on April 8th also apprehended 3 smugglers in the general area of Pesalai with 2.6 kg of gold worth Rs. 20 million made ready for illegal transfer to India via sea lines.
