Wimal bribery case : Decision to continue or dismiss case in Feb

The Colombo High Court will announce its decision on 28th February 2023 on whether or not to proceed with the petition filed against MP Wimal Weerawansa over the illegal accumulation of assets worth over Rs. 75 million.

According to Ada Derana, the decision was announced when the petition in this regard was taken up for hearing before Colombo High Court justice Navaratne Marasinghe today (16).

The lawyer representing MP Weerawansa informed the court that it was not possible to proceed with the case as a Member of Parliament is not clearly defined as a government official under the Consitution of Sri Lanka and hence a case cannot be conducted under the Bribery Act.

The lawyers of both parties submitted their arguments on the objection in this regard in court today.

Thereby, the judge announced that the decision on whether the case can proceed or not will be announced on 28th February 2023.

The Bribery Commission had filed a petition against MP Wimal Weerawansa for illegally accumulating a wealth of over Rs. 75 million during his tenure as a Minister between 2010 -2015.
