With all the darkness, Sri Lanka is at her finest moment.

The Rajapakses are a foolishly brazen bunch. They have no fear of people, protests, the military, their own party, western governments, sanctions or whether you and I are Buddhist, Hindu, Christian or Muslim. They are only fearful of one thing, and that is when all Sri Lankans come together as one. They hate to see a unified country and nothing is more fearful to them than people standing together in unity. That is why they hurriedly imposed a curfew fearing the worst from Sunday’s peaceful protest. The man who claims he was the single cause for defeating the world’s most dreaded terrorist group is today shuddering at the thought of a silent protest. Why?

Since 2005 their narrative has been to strategically divide one race from another giving the Sinhalese majority a minority complex and presenting themselves as saviors of the nation. Neither the Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims or Burghers need protection from any threat other than the ones created by one family and their political party. In 2022, and in a more enlightened world, that narrative is running out of steam and their obsessive grip on power is weakening and they know it too well. The moment of realisation for the people of Sri Lanka was when Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, Burghers and all other races had to stand together in long queues for their collective survival. The penny has finally dropped and the awareness that this Rajapakse racial hoax will not define Sri Lanka’s future is gradually gaining momentum with the people. In this time of literal darkness, Mother Sri Lanka is at her brightest hour, and we cannot let her down.

His election in 2019 was necessary for both, us and for Gota. For us, because with the absence of a strong judiciary, getting rid of a dictatorial leader has to go through a process of public purging as we are witnessing right now. For Gota, he had to come into power to be judged by the people for the unceasing plundering and murders linked to the family, especially since the judiciary failed to deliver on these. Justice finds its way in the strangest of circumstances and this is that defining circumstance. Having first labeled the Tamils and then the Muslims as ‘extremists’, today with little options left he is forced to call the Sinhalese ‘extremists’.

The Easter Sunday bombing was one bomb too far, and it turned the full wrath of God on the family. From the day he came into power he has had no rest from the issues of governance and has never enjoyed a single day of the reign he had envisaged. Let’s do our part in peace, whilst the God he challenged does his “vengeance is mine saith the Lord, I will repay. In due time their foot will slip; their day of disaster is near and their doom rushes upon them.” (Deuteronomy 32:35 ). We can see that process in rapid motion.

Finally, there is nobody who is faced with a more decisive moment in their lives today, than the military and police. The military needs to decide on which side of history they want to belong because fighting the power of the people will not be like fighting terrorists. The day the Rajapakses and their political henchman are removed and brought to justice, that is the day we gain true Independence. Sri Lanka is at her finest moment, don’t let her down.
