Biden condemns Texas abortion law; vows to defend women’s constitutional rights

President of the United States, Joe Biden has condemned a newly introduced law in Texas banning abortion from as early as six weeks and vowed to defend women’s constitutional rights, while the Supreme Court has refused to block the new law in Texas.

Issuing a statement, President Joe Biden said his administration “deeply  committed to the constitutional right established in Roe v. Wade nearly five decades ago and will protect and defend that right.”

In 1973 the landmark decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in which the Court ruled that the Constitution of the United States protects a pregnant woman’s right to an abortion until a fetus is viable – that is, able to survive outside the womb. This is usually between 22 and 24 weeks into a pregnancy.

The law bans abortions after detection of what anti-abortion campaigners call a fetal heartbeat.

The so-called Heartbeat Act also gives any individual the right to sue doctors who perform an abortion past the six-week point.
