The Police Constable, who had assaulted two youths in Eravur on Friday night, was interdicted, Public Security Minister Dr. Sarath Weerasekara said.
A video footage, which showed the Traffic Police officer in question repeatedly assaulting two motorcycle riders, went viral on social media over the weekend. TNP MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam brought the matter to the attention of Minister Weerasekara.
The Minister assured prompt action observing that the Police officers have no right to hit civilians. MP Rasamanickam in a Tweet thanked the Minister for his prompt response.
According to the Police, the police officer in question and his partner were noting down the measures where an accident had taken place. The incident took place after the police officer chased and overtook the motorcyclist and the pillion rider. The Minister also appealed to the public not to attribute the assault to racism.
