The government plans to complete the construction of the third phase of the Central Expressway from Pothuhera to Galagedara by 2025 and to complete the project by July 2026, Transport and Highways Minister Bandula Gunawardana said.
He said this during a special inspection tour of the ongoing construction of the Central Expressway from Pothuhera to Galagedara.
The Minister visited the project office located in the Lihinigiriya area of Pothuhera and attended a special presentation on the current progress of the project, which was attended by officials in charge of the project and construction company representatives.
The total distance of the third phase of the Central Expressway is 32.45 kms and it consists of four interchanges such as Pothuhera, Polgahawela, Rambukkana and Galagedara. The related interchange construction is currently underway.
During the inspection, the Minister explained to the officials and builders about the current economic situation in the country and the economic programme implemented by the government.
“It is not possible to take unlimited loans as done before and these construction works are being carried out in accordance with the agreements reached with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). All the work being done in the country will have to be completed,” the Minister said.
Local construction companies are already engaged in construction work under 17 contract packages for this phase from Pothuhera to Rambukkana.
After the completion of the construction, the people will be able to use the Central Expressway from Mirigama to Rambukkana.
