Minister of Law and Order and Southern Development, Sagala Ratnayake has recommended to the inspector General of Police to transfer the Acting OIC of the Sapugaskanda Police until the investigations into the incident with a JVP councilor is completed.
A confrontation has occurred between the OIC and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Western Provincial Councilor Asoka Ranwala at the Sapugaskanda Police station recently.
The Minister made the recommendation with the approval of the Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya, after receiving the report of a preliminary Investigation conducted by the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD).
The preliminary report has found that both the councilor and the police officer were at fault and therefore, the Minister has recommended the transfer of the police officer until the investigations are completed, Ministry sources said.
The Minister has ordered the Colombo Crimes Division to submit an urgent report on the incident in which both the councilor and the officer were accusing each other.
JVP Western Province Councilor Asoka Ranwala was arrested on Thursday night for allegedly threatening the acting OIC of the Sapugaskanda Police station.
He was remanded until January 19 when he was produced before the acting Negombo Magistrate yesterday.
According to the police, the councilor has come to the police station to inquire about an arrest of the youth who was allegedly assaulted by the police. The councilor has demanded the police to release the youth and when the acting OIC refused the request, the councilor has threatened the senior officer, the police said.
However the councilor alleges that he was assaulted by the Sapugaskanda OIC when he questioned about the youth.
