Over $ 16 b investment projects under discussion with Singapore: BOI

Sri Lanka is gearing to reap the benefits of the Free Trade Agreement with Singapore, with four mega projects being discussed by the Board of Investment (BOI). According to the BOI, the projects with a total investment value of over $ 16 billion in manufacturing mainly for exports are the first projects to realise since the Sri Lanka-Singapore FTA was implemented on 1 May. The largest of these is an export-oriented oil refinery valued at $ 14.8 billion in Hambantota.  The second is a $ 1 billion investment in a steel manufacturing plant in Trincomalee. The President of the Airline Pilots' Guild of Sri Lanka Captain Ruwan Vithanage yesterday told the Presidential Commission inquiring into the national airlines that the institutions incurred losses due to the appointment of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa's relatives to the key posts. Japan to donate 8 fire engines to Sri Lanka’s EPZs

The Government of Japan has decided to provide 8 fire engines along with firefighting equipment to Sri Lanka's Export Processing Zones (EPZs) in Katunayake, Biyagama, Seethawaka and Wathupitiwala, where more than 100,000 employees are working. Granite Capital (Pvt Ltd) will invest Rs 600 million to launch Sri Lanka's first international residential community villa development project, Catalina in Koggala. Catalina Managing Director Jeevan William said the investment comprises 55% Sri Lankan shareholder capital, and 45% of capital from investors from US, Australia and Singapore. Sri Lanka received highest ever FDI in 2017 – BOI

The Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into Sri Lanka has grown to over USD 1.63 billion in 2017, doubling the USD 802 million achieved in the previous year. According to the Board of Investment (BOI) this is the highest ever FDI surpassing the USD 1.61 billion in 2014, with solid growth across key sectors, Government Information Department reported. The strong growth is a direct consequence of the Government's reorientation of economic policy towards investment and export driven growth, rather than debt-funded public infrastructure spending. Among the highest growth sectors were export-oriented Manufacturing (+27%) and Services which includes Tourism and IT (+50%) and Infrastructure (+190%). In line with the Government's policy of promoting local and foreign investments for the development of Sri Lanka, it has become necessary to regularize and update the present visa issuing system. On the request of qualified foreigners, in future, the government will issue three types of visa - Visit Visa, resident Visa, and Transit Visa. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Management has recommended revising the current visa types and the fees for them.
