Ten people were killed and two others were injured when a van they were travelling in collided head-on with a bus, on the Badulla-Mahiyanganaya road near the Mahiyanganaya Maha Vidyalaya in pre-dawn hours of today.
The police said a van carrying 12 people collided head-on with a bus that was traveling from Diyatalawa to Trincomalee on the Mahiyanganaya-Badulla Main Road around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday (17).
Twelve people have been traveling in the van at the time of the accident and ten of them have died after admission to the hospital. The other two injured passengers are also in serious condition, police said.

Seven adults and three children have died in the accident. The bodies of the deceased has been placed at the Mahiyangana hospital.
The police suspect that the driver of the van may have fallen asleep and swerved into the wrong lane.
