Sri Lanka nationwide inflation rises to 3.4 percent in July 2018

Sri Lanka’s nationwide inflation in July 2018 determined under the National Consumer Price Index (NCPI) ascended to 3.4 percent from 2.5 percent recorded in June 2018 on a year-on-year basis, the Department of Census and Statistics reported Tuesday.

The NCPI for all items for the month of July 2018 marginally increased to 126.6 from 126.5 in June 2018. The increase in the index point was due to the expenditure value increase of food items by 0.07 percent and non‐food items by 0.08 percent.

Year on Year inflation of food group has increased from 0.5 percent in June 2018 to 2.4 percent in July 2018 while that of non-food group has increased from 4.2 percent to 4.3 percent during the month.

On year on year basis, contribution of food commodities to inflation was 1.09 percent in July 2018 and contribution of non-food items was 2.31 percent.

The moving average inflation for the month of July 2018 is 5.1 percent. The corresponding rate for June 2018 was 5.3 percent.
