‘No future for education without syllabus change’

Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam says school education has no future if syllabuses are not amended.

Speaking at a programme at the Ministry of Education Minister Kariyawasam said such amendments have become a difficult task, even though the National Education Institute has been advised to be up to date on the syllabus.

The Education Minister stated the syllabus can’t be changed because teachers follow different teaching traditions.

Minister Kariyawasam noted certain people don’t like the change and stick to tuition classes to make it timely.

The Minister said on the other hand teachers don’t like to learn a new syllabus and want to teach what they’ve been learning.

He stressed it is not easy to change the syllabus adding however it should be done.

Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam noted several subjects have become outdated while adding that some subjects cannot be covered in a year.

The Minister said officials can use the privileges of the Education Ministry by earning, gaining benefits and obtaining Commissions adding however the Ministry does not carry out politics in such a manner.Minister Kariyawasam added Ministry officials had left aside their personal lives within the past 4 years.
