Sri Lanka Police have arrested three individuals for attempting to mail 600 letters to temples allegedly aiming to incite communal violence.
Fort Police arrested the three suspects with the consignment of letters at the Central Mail Exchange yesterday (02). They have been handed over to the Colombo Crimes Division today for further investigations.
The relevant letters had been directed to various temples throughout the country. However, the mass mailing has aroused suspicions of officers at the Colombo Central Mail Exchange and they have informed the police.
The letters reportedly containing defamatory comments about the President included a number of anti-government rhetoric. According to a Fort Police official the letters say the President had prior knowledge about the Easter Sunday attacks.
State-run Daily News reported that once of the suspect is closely associated with a minister and the other two are ministry employees. A person running an advertising company who was arrested by the police has claimed responsibility for this, Police said.
