Address issues facing women, children – Women For Rights

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) affiliated Women For Rights (WFR) organisation yesterday called on the government to pay immediate attention to the issues faced by children amidst an unprecedented economic and social crisis.

“A nine year old girl was killed on May 28, 2022 in Atalugama. This is the 14th child death in a year and a half in recent times. The fact that more and more such incidents are being reported even before the heat and turmoil of one incident has subsided reaffirms the slow pace of action against crimes against children in our society’s provision of law and the administration of justice” the WFR said in a statement.

As an organization that is constantly committed  to the rights and protection of children, we, the Women for Rights, urge the Government and the Child Protection Authority, the agency responsible for the protection of children, to expedite investigations into this incident and bring to justice the perpetrators on a priority basis, the statement said.

The WFR also urged authorities to give immediate priority to issues, such as children dying in hospitals due to lack of medicine, security to children while parents spend their days in queues due to the economic crisis, attention towards children who have dropped out of school due to the disruption of education due to the pandemic, children who are abused and punished in schools due to wrong educational practices, children who die prematurely or commit suicide due to problems faced by adults such as debt, microfinance, family disputes, children affected by road accidents, child slavery, child sex workers, dangerous and unsafe jobs, child marriage and children victimized by pagan beliefs.
