The Customs Trade Union Alliance warned that they will withdraw from essential services if concerns relating to the Directress General of Customs being removed from her post are not addressed.
Speaking at a media briefing today Vice-Secretary of the Customs Staff Officers Union Sudath de Silva said the Customs rejects the appointment of Rear Admiral Shemal Fernando, a retired Navy Personnel, as the Director General of the Customs Department.
The Union therefore requested the subject Minister, the Prime Minister and the President to withdraw the Cabinet paper.
Sudath De Silva noted the Customs workers have ensured that passengers are not inconvenienced and have not hindered quarantine services.
He stressed those who tabled the Cabinet paper should bear the responsibility of the loss caused to the economy.
