Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Defense has warned against dissemination of false news, rumors and other propaganda inciting communal violence in the country.
The Ministry of Defense Media Centre in a release issued on Saturday, under the signature of Military Spokesman Brigadier Sumith Atapattu said laws under Emergency Regulations will be strictly enforced against persons, groups or organizations that use any method of media to spread rumors, false propaganda or disinformation.
“Any individuals, groups or organizations involved publishing false news, information, images, interviews or any other form of publications that could provoke communal/racial tensions, public disturbance or disunity among the people is liable for prosecution under Emergency Regulations, currently in force,” it said.
Moreover, actions will also be taken against, persons, groups or organizations who make misleading statements or acts trying to mislead the Security Forces, in accordance with the Emergency Regulations.
Therefore, all sections of the general public are strongly cautioned to refrain from involving in such activities.
