Hearing of Contempt of Court case against Dr. Padeniya scheduled for September

The Court of Appeal has ordered the hearing of the Contempt of Court case filed against Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) President Dr. Anuruddha Padeniya for allegedly undermining the Court of Appeal judgement delivered regarding the SAITM issue on September 4.

The case was taken up today before a panel comprising Appeal Court judges Shiran Gunaratne and Mahinda Samayawardana.

The bench ordered the case to be taken up on September 4 before a two-judge bench comprising judges Shiran Gunaratne and Arjuna Obeysekara.

Two civil society activists Prof. Sarath Wijesuriya, the Convener of National Movement for Social Justice (NMSJ) and Gamini Viyangoda, the co-convener of Puravesi Balaya Social Movement had filed this Contempt of Court action naming GMOA President Dr. Anuruddha Padeniya as the respondent.

Plaintiffs allege that Dr. Anuruddha Padeniya, speaking at a public meeting in Colombo in April 2017, strongly criticized a decision of the Court of Appeal regarding the SAITM Private Medical College.

Accordingly, Dr. Anuruddha Padeniya had insulted the court and the petition and the complaint has been lodged seeking appropriate action against him.
