The Police have used the video footage to trace and identify the individuals who collected the debris with no regard to travel restrictions and the warnings, the Police Media Spokesperson said.
Legal actions will be sought against the suspects under the provisions of the Quarantine and Prevention of Diseases Ordinance and the relevant sections of the Penal Code, he added.
Chairperson of Marine Environmental Protection Authority (MEPA), Darshini Lahandapura stressed that the items belong to the Merchant Shipping Secretariat while collecting such items as a punishable offense under the Merchant Shipping Act.
