General Secretary of United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera states that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) candidate for the next presidential election in 2020 will definitely be the current President Maithripala Sirisena.
He made this statement speaking to the media after a party meeting at Hulandawa Junction in Moneragala Sunday.
The Minister said even if the President personally does not agree, they will convince him, as the party leader, to agree with the party’s decision to field him as the presidential candidate from the party.
He said that there is no other candidate who is honest and earned the trust of the people locally as well as internationally.
When asked about the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna led by the former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, Minister Amaraweera said they believe the joint opposition party will join the SLFP in future and the SLFP is also trying to bring them to the party.
“As the other parties are divided now we are taking measures to strengthen the party. We are doing our work well,” he said.
