Opposition Leader calls on Armed Forces to act with responsibility

Opposition and Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Leader Sajith Premadasa yesterday urged officials of all Security Forces to act with responsibility at this crucial hour for the sake of over 22 million people in the country and not for the protection of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Addressing the nation, the Opposition Leader said at this moment when the entire countrymen make one request from the Government to solve the severe economic problems faced by them due to the escalating prices of essential commodity items and also the shortage of essential goods such as fuel and gas it is not ethical to attack them using the Armed Forces.

The Opposition Leader said as everybody is aware that the Executive President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has left the country without solving the burning issues of people he said it is unbearable the Government is making different statements for the benefit of the President and the Prime Minister by distorting the democracy in the country and asked security forces personnel to take stringent measures to control the youth who are engaged in a peaceful protest campaign to chase these two undemocratic leaders from the country.

The Opposition Leader vehemently condemned the acts of the President and the Prime Minister to incite security forces to destroy people in an unruly manner.

He said people are engaged in protest campaigns not to gain personal advantageous but to protect the country’s democracy which have already been tarnished by the unruly behaviour of the President and the Prime Minister. Premadasa also urged the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa who has already fled the country and the Prime Minister to refrain from attacking innocent people using security forces.

He also made another request from all three forces in the country to refrain from attacking ordinary people who are engaged in peaceful demonstrations against the Government’s unruly actions.

The Opposition Leader once again urged both the President and the Prime Minister to step down from their positions as both of them are inefficient to solve the burning economic issues of people in the country and this can be seen with the escalating prices of essential food items and also unending queues everywhere in the country to buy fuel and gas.
