A serious issue has arisen regarding the payment of salaries for government sector employees for this month without a functioning Cabinet now.
It is not possible to get Cabinet approval to print money to pay salaries to government servants as it is a question whether a Cabinet meeting can be convened within a few days.
The legal space to print money is provided after the Cabinet decision is referred to the Monetary Board. Sources of the Public Administration Ministry say that an average of Rs.29 billion per month is needed to pay the salaries of Government sector employees. However Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, who became the Acting President, has the ability to call for an emergency Cabinet meeting to take approval to print money.
It is reported that this situation has affected the importation of fuel as the payments for fuel shipments cannot be made without Cabinet approval.
