Railway strike confirmed for Wednesday

Railway drivers, controllers, station masters, guards and technical officers have decided to once again launch a strike action from midnight on Wednesday.

Secretary of the Locomotive Engineering Operators’ Union Indika Dodangoda said the decision to launch the strike was reached following a stalemate in talks with authorities yesterday and today to address salary anomalies.

Dodangoda noted the Cabinet of Ministers approved a decision on the 8th of May and called for this decision to be seen through.

He stated the last strike action was called off following the intervention of the President.

Indika Dodangoda said the Joint Trade Union Collective decided to continue the strike action until they receive a final acceptable decision.

A round of talks with President Maithripala Sirisena last evening ended with no solution reached while another round of talks took place this morning with the Chairman of the Salaries and Cadre Commission.

Representatives of the Railway Trade Union Collective then met at 2 this afternoon to reach a final decision on the strike action.

The previous strike was carried out over 4 days and was called off on the 12th of August following discussions with President Maithripala Sirisena.
