Repatriation of remains of deceased three Sri Lankan students from Azerbaijan at government’s expense

Sri Lanka’s Foreign Relations Ministry said the post-mortem in regard to the deaths of the three Sri Lankan students has been completed at the Republic Hospital in Baku.

The Foreign Ministry said it is presently coordinating to repatriate the remains of the deceased three Sri Lankan students who were studying at Western Caspian University in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The remains of the students, who died as a result of suffocation from smoke inhalation due to a fire that has occurred in their apartment building in Baku on 9 January 2020, will be brought home at state expense upon the completion of necessary documentation, the Ministry said.

The Ministry of Foreign Relations expects the bodies of Malsha Sandeepani (23), Tharuki Amaya (21) from Bokundara, Piliyandala and Amodya Madhuhansi (24) from Pahala Bomiriya, Kaduwela will be brought to the country tomorrow (15).

The authorities in Azerbaijan have initiated an investigation into this incident.
