For the first time in Sri Lanka a tourist-friendly three-wheeler service will be introduced under a new program with tuk-tuk drives licensed and registered with the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA).
The tourist-friendly three-wheeler service will be introduced under the patronage of the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on 30th of this month at the Galle Face Green at 5:30 p.m.
The project is being implemented by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority under the direction of the Minister of Finance and Mass Media Mangala Samaraweera in keeping with the budget proposals presented last year.
The 2018 Budget promised to make the meters mandatory and implement a program to train tuk-tuk drivers.
At next Monday’s event, the SLTDA will symbolically award the certificates and the seal of approval to 150 tuk-tuk drivers who have successfully completed the training provided by the SLTDA.
The certified tuk-tuk drives can display the seal on their three-wheeler allowing local and foreign tourists to easily identified the trained drivers and obtain their services. The drivers would be required to display their information such as name, address and contact number prominently on the tuk-tuk.
Nearly 750 tuk-tuk drivers from Colombo, Ella, Bentota and Deniyaya areas have completed the training and they will also be given the stamp and certificates in due time.
The SLTDA has also taken steps to provide a separate identity card for the certified three-wheeler drivers.
In addition to the trishaws, the SLTDA plans to issue this Tourist-Friendly seal of approval to other establishments such as restaurants and lodges that offer services to tourists.
Following the inauguration on the 30th the certified three-wheelers displaying the seal will parade the city.
In addition to the Prime Minister, Minister of Finance and Mass Media Mangala Samaraweera, Minister of Tourism Development and Christian Affairs John Amaratunga, Minister of Project Management, Youth Affairs and Skills Development Sagala Ratnayake and Minister of Development Strategies and International Trade Malik Samarawickrama will also participate in the event.zz
