SriLankan Airlines lost Rs. 93 billion due to financial irregularities, Presidential Commission was told

During the tenure of Kapila Chandrasena as the Chief Executive Officer of SriLankan Airlines from 2011-2015, the national carrier lost more than 93 billion rupees, the Presidential Commission investigating the malpractices at the airline was told.

Secretary of SriLankan Airlines, Dalreen Thirukumar made this disclosure testifying before the Presidential Commission of inquiry appointed to probe the alleged misconduct in the SriLankan Airlines, SriLankan Catering and Mihin Lanka yesterday.

Kapila Chandrasena was appointed as the Director of SriLankan Airlines as a result of a meeting chaired by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa in 2008.

Mrs. Thirukumar told the Presidential Commission in 2011, at the Board of Directors meeting held under the chairmanship of Nishantha Wickremesinghe, Kapila Chandrasena was officially appointed as the CEO of the airline.

The Company Secretary also told the Commission that there was no document on Kapila Chandrasena’s qualifications included in his personal file.

Chairman of the Presidential Commission, former Supreme Court Judge Anil Goonaratne ordered to summon former CEO of SriLankan Airlines Manoj de Vass Gunawardena, who was appointed as the Regional Head of the SriLankan Airlines for Europe, North America and Canada.

It was also questioned whether the position of the Regional Head of State was necessary for those countries.

Responding to this, Mrs. Thirukumar said that the job description in relation to the posts would be presented to the Commission in the future.

The Chairman also informed the witness to submit Manoj de Vass Gunawardena’s personal file to the Commission.
