A protest was staged by farmers of Thanamalvila, stating that they have not received the drought relief which they were promised.It was expected that drought relief be provided by the Ministry of Disaster Management, through the district secretaries.
The protest was staged obstructing the Thanamalvila-Colombo main road from the 17th mile. “The food items that were distributed are spoilt,” said the protesters.
Vehicular movement along the road was hampered was hampered for two hours. A tense situation erupted when the individuals who obtained the tender for the rations arrived at the scene.
The protest was called off when the Thanamalvila Divisional Secretary, who arrived at the scene, promised that rations which are up to proper standards will be provided to the public.
