Three associates of underworld leader ‘Makandure Madush’ arrested

The Organized Crime Prevention Division (OCPD) of Sri Lanka Police says three close associates of underworld leader ‘Makandure Madush’ including his close confidante have been arrested and they are being questioned.

A spokesperson of Organized Crime Prevention Division said Akila Niroshan Palliyaguru, who was in charge of the heroin business and financial affairs of ‘Makandure Madush’, was arrested along with Ishanka Savithri the wife of another underworld drug kingpin Devundara Chamil and Manoj Kavinda, who had been involved in the drug racket.

The suspects were arrested while they were traveling in a vehicle on a tip received by the Special Task Force (STF) Police intelligence unit.

When the suspects were arrested, the police found 2 grams and 59 milligrams of heroin in Ishanka Savithri’s hand bag.

Subsequently, on the information received from the suspects during questioning, the police found 07 grams and 700 milligrams of heroin in the temporary home of Akila Niroshan Palliyaguru in Mt. Lavinia.

The suspects were handed over to the Organized Crime Investigation Unit for further investigations.

Police had obtained detention orders to hold the suspects for seven days for interrogation when they were produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate.

According to the police Samarasinghe Arachchige Madush Lakshitha alias Makandure Madush is believed to be hiding in Dubai and directing the underworld activities in Sri Lanka.
