Indonesia quake kills at least 268 people, many of them children at school
An earthquake that struck Indonesia’s West Java killed at least 268 people, many of them children, with 151 still missing, disaster relief officials said on Tuesday, as rescuers searched the rubble of destroyed buildings for survivors.
The shallow 5.6-magnitude quake struck in Indonesia’s most populous province on Monday afternoon, causing significant damage to the town of Cianjur, about 75 km (45 miles) southeast of the capital, Jakarta, and burying at least one village under a landslide.
Saudi Arabia shocks Argentina 2-1 in one of the World Cup’s all-time biggest upsets.
It’s over!
We have just witnessed one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history.
After leading 1-0 and seeing three first-half goals disallowed for offside, Argentina is stunned by two Saudi goals in five minutes early in the second period.
Argentina did put Saudi Arabia under sustained pressure once going a goal down, but a mixture of toothless attacking and brilliant defending from the Green Falcons meant an Argentina equalizer never really looked likely.
Remarkably, this is Argentina’s first defeat in 36 games, a run stretching back to a loss against Brazil three years ago, and it is just Saudi Arabia’s second win in World Cup history.
The Albiceleste were considered among the favorites to lift the World Cup given its recent form, but this result has just blown Group C wide open.
Canada: Why the country wants to bring in 1.5m immigrants by 2025
Canada is betting big on immigration to fill the gap in its economy left by aging Baby Boomers leaving the workforce – but not everyone is on board with bringing in so many people from abroad.
Earlier this month, the federal government announced an aggressive plan to take in 500,000 immigrants a year by 2025, with almost 1.5 million new immigrants coming to the country over the next three years.
This plan would see Canada welcome about eight-times the number of permanent residents each year – per population – than the UK, and four-times more than its southern neighbour, the United States.
But a recent poll shows that there is also anxiety about welcoming in so many newcomers.
Toll in China factory fire rises to 38; workers reportedly violated safety measures
A fire at a factory in Anyang City in central China’s Henan Province has killed 36 people, state media said Tuesday, citing local authorities. Two people at the plant are still missing. News agency Xinhua reported that the fire broke out Monday afternoon.
CCTV later reported that a preliminary investigation had found the fire was caused by “electric welding in which workers violated safety measures”.
