Train strike inconveniences railway commuters

Sri Lanka Railway Locomotive Engine Operators Unions launched a 48-hour railway strike from midnight Thursday based on several demands including resolving salary anomalies and grades.

The Railway Trade Union Alliance (RTUA) has decided to go ahead with their planned 48-hour strike from midnight Thursday since the discussions with the Minister of Finance have failed to reach an agreement to resolve their salary anomalies.

During the discussions the government side said that the problems of the employees could be solved within a month and a half. However, it is said that the employees have not consented.

Meanwhile, all the mail trains scheduled to run last night have been canceled, say reports.

Railway strike will continue until midnight tomorrow (22nd).
