Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said the Parliament will be convened on February 8 to debate the two reports of the Presidential Commissions on the Central Bank bond issue and investigation of Serious Acts of Fraud and Corruption.
The Premier made this statement at a United National Party rally held in Deniyaya in Morawaka yesterday.
He said the decision has been taken due to ministers being engaged in local government election propaganda activities which will end on the 7th.
Previously the party leaders agreed to hold the debate on the reports of the two presidential commissions on February 20 and 21.
However, President Maithripala Sirisena recently challenged the political parties to hold the debate on the two reports at least once before the election on February 10th saying that the parties fear that if the two reports were debated in Parliament, most of the misconducts of them would be exposed.
On a request made by the Leader of the JVP parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake to call a party leaders meeting to decide a date on the debate, the Prime Minister has informed the Speaker Karu Jayasuriya on the new date to convene parliament.
Speaking at the public rally held today in support of the UNP candidates in Matara district, the Premier said that there is no any fact mentioned in the report against the UNP or him.
The Premier said there is nothing to hide on him or the party and he is ready to give the opportunity to debate the reports in Parliament for many days. The party leaders can decide on the number of days, he said.
“We have nothing to hide, we have nothing to sweep under the carpet,” the Premier said.
The Premier said he or his party has no need to protect fraudsters or corrupt individuals and necessary instructions have already been given to Attorney General to take legal action against the perpetrators.
