Sri Lankan Navy accused of chasing away nearly 1000 Tamil Nadu fishermen from island waters

Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu have accused the Sri Lankan Navy personnel of snapping their fishing nets and chasing them back to Indian waters while they were fishing near the Katchatheevu islet.

A fisheries official in Rameswaram has told PTI that nearly 1000 Fishermen from Rameswaram had ventured into the sea yesterday and were fishing near Katchatheevu islet when the Sri Lankan Navy arrived.

Sri Lankan naval personnel had come to the spot in three boats and cut the nets of at least five boats before asking them to leave, Tamil Nadu Fishermen Mechanised Boat Association President P Sesuraja alleged.

Following the incident all the fishermen returned to the shore this morning, he said.
