Two amended Bills to empower Bribery Commission in parliament today

The Government will present two amendment Bills in Parliament today, to empower the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) and file cases based on facts revealed by Commissions of Inquiry.

The Bills to amend the Commissions of Inquiry Act (Chapter 393) and the Bribery Act (Chapter 26), will be presented at the commencement of sittings today, the Government Information Department said.

According the Amendments, the Director General of the Bribery Commission is given the power to file cases under the Bribery Act or Declaration of Assets and Liabilities Law based on the findings of the Commissions of Inquiry appointed by the President. The amendments need to be passed by a 2/3 majority in Parliament.

The President has the power to appoint Commissions of Inquiry, whenever it appears to him that an investigation or inquiry or both, is necessary for the administration, management and functions of any Government institution or the conduct of any public officer. Presidential Commissions of Inquiries could be appointed on any matter relating to the national interest of public safety or wellbeing as decided by the President.
