Police have launched an investigation into why the Police Officer appointed for the security of the Chief Incumbent of the Kataragama Kiriwehera Rajamaha Viharaya Ven. Kobawaka Damminda Thera did not shoot the suspect who shot the Chief Incumbent.
Speaking during a media briefing held in Colombo, Police Media Spokesman Superintendent Ruwan Gunasekara said a Police Officer and two civil security personnel had been appointed for the security of the Chief Incumbent.
The Media Spokesman said under the provisions of the Penal Code the Police Officer had the right to shoot the suspect.

Superintendent Gunasekara noted the three officers appointed for the security of the Chief Incumbent had attempted to arrest the suspect however adding their attempt had failed and the Police Officer had not fired a single shot at the suspect.
He said the relevant Police Officer is being inquired regarding his failure to practice his clear right to shoot in self-defence under the Penal Code.
