A CONVERSATION WITH A FRIEND by Faraz Shauketaly

Faraz,
how many people know that the country is broke ! , that the economy has to be put right , which means increased output , increased taxes, there is no one in the present parliament willing to force this down the public . All want to be the ‘hero’ at the next election .

Dr Sara has quite rightly said the difficult time ahead has to be explained to the people, so that there will be less protest .

Srilankans have to understand that they too have been part of the problem in addition to corruption and poor management.

Dear Friend,
Totally agreed: the people have unfortunately (for whatever reason) believed and lived the lie (obviously put forth by legislators at national and regional and district levels) that they have never had it so good and that even better times lay ahead if they vote the “correct” way. Finally the truth is before the people and the only answer is a very hard time for the next two years or so. Hopefully the millions of our friends aka “tourists” will not entirely abandon the people and the positivity they experienced in Sri Lanka and will continue to prop us up in exchange for memorable memories and furthering their friendships.

It is now like never before for a new youthful political movement to be born guided perhaps by outstanding elder citizens with impeccable records (and there ARE such eminent persons) to get their plans together and contest the next parliamentary elections with a view towards making a change albeit a REAL change.

This business of asking MR to step down is in my view a distraction. The SLPP wanted a huge majority and got it because they wished for STRONG government.

In that context it is the President who must understand that the buck stops at his feet. He must leave parliament (the voice of the people) to decide on the fate of the Executive Presidency. As he says he is not responsible for any of this mess he has nothing to fear his retirement in Mirihana interspersed with regular visits to his erstwhile adoptive land where his off spring reside.

Leave Sri Lanka be – you did your best and what more can anyone ask for but to deliver to the best of ones ability.

You have also perhaps inadvertently made billionaires of some around you, given some a new purpose in life and yet others a whole new life. The gratitude from them alone will hold you in great stead in the years ahead and also on the day of Judgement when the scales of real justice will reveal the truth.

Hopefully on those scales will, on one side be the likes of Lasantha Wickremetunge, Wasim Thajudeen, the Bond scammers, the 106 missing pages of that report, the dead and victims of the Easter bombings, the strange case of Ekneligoda, transferring in effect Naval business to a private entity and several such cases.

I have little doubt that in the other side of the scales you will have enough to balance out the other side, assuring you of eternal peace whenever He decides.

Because after all Man proposes but God has the exclusive, the scoop in Disposing.
