Shamindra Ferdinando the News Editor of the Island newspaper has called for an immediate investigation of the TNA. Mr. Ferdinando appearing on the Newsline programme on TV1, sensationally called for the immediate investigation of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) citing the party’s support of the LTTE terror organization on Friday night. Mr. Ferdinando maintained that it is not too late – ‘even at this late stage’ – to investigate the TNA saying that not only were they the de-facto political arm of the LTTE by recognizing the LTTE as the official voice of the Tamil people.
Mr. Ferdinando went further. He cited that the TNA had been silent when the LTTE held 300,000 people in effect as a ‘human shield’ at the tail end of the fight against terrorism. The LTTE had held a vast number of people estimated at the time to be 300,000 trapped near the Nandikadal lagoon and had used the crowd in effect as a human shield. Later reports cited that the LTTE had forcibly held the crowd as hostages who were not permitted to return towards the Sri Lanka Army lines and potential safety.
Mr. Ferdinando spoke hours after M A Sumanthiran in a strong statement delivered in parliament warned the Sri Lanka government that his party would seek recourse via the International Criminal Court (ICC) if Sri Lanka failed to deliver its undertakings to the United Nations to have a hybrid court to investigate allegations of war crimes at the end of the war. He pointed out that if they went to the ICC the entire process would be all international – meaning there would be no space or position for Sri Lanka government representatives other than perhaps the governments’ legal counsel.
