Police woman burnt to death by ex-military husband

A female Police Sergeant attached to the Gonapeenuwala Police who had suffered severe burn injuries after being set on fire by her husband has died while receiving treatment.

The Gonapeenuwala Police said the victim had died while receiving treatment at the Balapitiya Hospital today.

The deceased has been identified as a mother of two and a resident of the Wadugoda area in Gonapeenuwala.

The husband of the victim is a former Army officer who has been discharged from service and is employed as a fisherman.

According to reports, the suspect had returned home from work at the time which his wife had left for work and after she had returned home an argument between the two parties had escalated.

The suspect had thereafter poured petrol onto the woman and had set her on fire. Despite the woman having attempted to put out the fire she had failed to do so with her nieghbours eventually arriving and putting out the fire.

They had thereafter informed the ambulance service which had transported the woman who had sustained serious burn injuries and her husband who had minor injuries to a nearby hospital.

The suspect has been remanded until the 18th of February after being inquired at the hospital by the Balapitiya Magistrate.
