The Amazons Are Coming! Sri Lanka Welcomes the World’s Adventurous Women Once Again

More than 250 international participants are heading to Sri Lanka for the eighth edition of Raid Amazones, bringing adventure, international attention and a welcome celebration of everything that makes this island extraordinary.

There are occasions when Sri Lanka needs no expensive advertising campaign to remind the world of its extraordinary beauty. Sometimes all it takes is a few hundred adventurous women, a spirit of determination and an island that seems almost purpose-built for exploration.

The internationally celebrated Raid Amazones is returning to Sri Lanka from November 2 to 10, bringing more than 250 international participants and an accompanying contingent of organisers, journalists and medical personnel. This year’s adventure will unfold across the beautiful Kalutara district, where rivers, forests, plantations and coastal landscapes will provide the setting for a demanding celebration of endurance, friendship and discovery.

Founded in 2001 by French adventure specialist Alexandre Debanne, Raid Amazones is an exclusively female adventure challenge that combines physical competition with cultural discovery. Participants undertake demanding outdoor activities while experiencing the traditions, communities and natural beauty of their host country.

For Sri Lanka, the occasion carries particular significance. This will be the eighth time the country has hosted the event, making it the most frequently chosen destination in Raid Amazones history. Previous editions have taken competitors across some of the island’s most spectacular landscapes, generating international publicity and introducing Sri Lanka to audiences who might otherwise never have considered visiting.

The event’s return is also a tribute to the enduring confidence of its organisers in Sri Lanka as a destination. Through periods of economic difficulty and uncertainty, the island’s extraordinary combination of natural beauty and human warmth has continued to attract international visitors.

SriLankan Airlines, Connaissance De Ceylan and the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau are collaborating to deliver this year’s event, with Turyaa Kalutara serving as the official accommodation partner.

There is a wider opportunity here that should not be overlooked. Adventure tourism offers Sri Lanka the prospect of attracting visitors interested in experiences rather than simply hotel rooms. Such visitors can help create opportunities for guides, transport providers, small businesses and communities beyond the traditional tourism centres.

The international exposure is equally valuable. Previous editions have generated more than 300 international media features, alongside extensive television, digital and social media coverage. Every photograph of a Sri Lankan landscape, every account of local hospitality and every participant returning home with a memorable story becomes another advertisement for the country.

Be that as it may, the greatest attraction Sri Lanka offers is something that cannot be manufactured by a tourism promotion agency. It is the warmth of its people, the diversity of its landscapes and the remarkable ability of this small island to leave a lasting impression on those who visit.

For once, the international spotlight will fall on Sri Lanka not because of economic distress, political controversy or some national misfortune, but because people from around the world have chosen to come here for the sheer joy of adventure.

Welcome back, Amazons. May your adventures be unforgettable, your friendships enduring and your memories of Sri Lanka bring you back again.

And may the world see the Sri Lanka that Sri Lankans know and love.
