Sri Lankan Navy on Saturday arrested two Sri Lankans attempting to smuggle a stock of gold weighing 7 kilograms across the northern seas.
Based on information received by the Navy, a group of naval personnel attached to the Northwestern Naval Command arrested the two suspects attempting to smuggle 7 kg of gold via sea. The apprehension was made at the beach area of Kandakkuliya, Kalpitiya yesterday (24 February).
It is estimated that the gold stock is approximately worth Rs. 5 million and was in the form of 70 biscuits each weighing 100g.
Meanwhile, the naval troops also seized a dinghy used for this illegal activity.
The suspects along with the stock of gold, dinghy and other items were handed over to the Customs Office of Sinnapadu for onward legal action.
