Farmers to get Urea sack for Rs. 10,000

Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said yesterday that arrangements have been made to provide a sack of Urea fertilizer provided by the Indian government to all paddy farmers at a subsidized price of Rs.10,000 from next week. A bundle of Urea is sold in the market for Rs.42,000.

He said the fertilizer from India was checked by an expert committee and they have determined that it was of good quality.

The minister also said that the ship carrying the first cargo of 40,000 metric tonnes of Urea has started its journey from the Oman port to Sri Lanka.

He expressed confidence that the goods will reach Sri Lanka on July 8 and it will be possible to distribute the goods to the farmers starting from July 10. Amaraweera also said that steps will be taken to provide 100 kilogrammes of urea fertilizer per hectare.

The Minister said that out of the total stock of 50,000 metric tons of fertilizer provided to Sri Lanka by the Indian government, 10,000 metric tons will be given to maize farmers.
